Alarm Installation
Your home
is one of the most valuable possessions you have and intrusion is an
everyday risk to each and every home. That is why more and more people
have either beefed up the security of their home through the
installation of metal grills and security doors but still burglaries
happen even in the most locked-up houses. All the locks in the world
cannot deter the determined burglar given enough time unless you have a
second line of defense is installed.
Wireless alarms have become cheaper and easier to install that
virtually no more wires are needed to install them. The only
wired part of these wireless alarm systems, are the main or base units
where a optional phone line and power chords are installed.
The peripheral
devices are all connected wirelessly and can be installed with utmost
ease. But before we go to the installation, we first have to determine
the actual needs that have to be satisfied. Most alarm systems act as
deterrent rather than to prevent it totally. Determine the risks for
your home by taking a walk around and determining the places where you
think these scoundrels are likely to strike. A wide glass door on the
patio, on the front and back doors and on windows are the most common
entry points.
Some alarms utilize PIR or Passive Infrared sensors that have detectors
that see infrared radiation in the area it covers. These can prevent
thieves from even getting near your house by activating lights
or sounding an alarm.
More sophisticated alarm systems have lasers
though the apparent cost limits their use to commercial ones. If say
the thieves get around to or find a way to defeat the PIR proximity
sensors, you now have to rely on more mechanical devices such as
magnetic switches and touch sensors on doors. Glass panes can be
protected by either break films or magnetic switches that are activated
when the glass breaks. Magnetic switches work with the use of a strong
permanent magnet in one piece and a magnetic switch in the other. When
the magnet moves away from the other part, the alarm sounds and
electronic circuitry locks the sound circuit until the alarm is
disabled by the proper code on the master console.
All the above types of alarms are installed easily with either screws
or double adhesive tape. The break sensor on some older glass alarms,
have a thin metallic film applied to the pane of glass, a break in
which would trigger the alarm. On doors, double adhesive tape is used
to apply the alarm system and the same is done with windows. PIR
sensors for indoor applications are also available that with all the
other alarm components are connected via radio frequency to the master
unit where arming and disarming is done.
More sophisticated alarm
systems can have the functionality to dial a pre-set number, either
your mobile-phone or the local police/security office and play a recorded
message to indicate the crime that is being committed. These alarm
systems function in a silent mode that allows police to
respond and apprehend the perpetrators without endangering any
inhabitants within the property should there be any.
